Princess Diana’s driver stirs controversy by disclosing enigmatic details about the fatal crash years ago: “If I had been behind the wheel, perhaps the tragedy could have been avoided, and the villain wouldn’t have prevailed.”

For years, Steve Davies kept quiet about the events of that tragic night in Paris. He was Diana’s loyal chauffeur, a quiet presence in her life, especially during her most turbulent moments. He saw her at her lowest, when she was grappling with heartbreak, public scrutiny, and personal upheaval. Despite the

secrecy and the years of silence that followed, Steve has now decided to break that silence, reflecting on the fateful night when Princess Diana died. He firmly believes that if he had been behind the wheel instead of Henri Paul, the driver involved in the fatal crash, Diana might still be alive today.

Steve’s connection to Diana went beyond his role as a chauffeur. He had become one of her trusted companions during a difficult period in her life. He drove her to appointments, to events, and sometimes just on quiet drives when she needed to escape the constant pressure of her royal duties. Diana confided in him about her personal struggles, and they developed a bond built on trust and mutual respect. Steve had a rare vantage point on Diana’s life, seeing her not just as the Princess of Wales, but as a woman who was wrestling with her own emotions, far from the public eye. He understood her pain and the challenges she faced, and in many ways, he became her protector.

That night in August 1997, Diana was being driven through the streets of Paris in a car with Henri Paul at the wheel. Steve believes that if he had been the one driving, the tragic crash might have been avoided. Henri Paul, who was later found to have alcohol in his system, was not equipped to handle the high-speed chase from paparazzi in such a chaotic and risky environment. In contrast, Steve knew the importance of staying calm under pressure and keeping a level head in stressful situations. He often took extra precautions to ensure Diana’s safety, making sure to avoid risky driving conditions and staying aware of the paparazzi’s tactics. In Steve’s mind, if he had been behind the wheel that night, he would have taken a different route, been more cautious, and most importantly, kept Diana from harm.

While the details of the crash are still debated, Steve’s conviction about the events is clear. He is not suggesting that Henri Paul was entirely to blame, but he does believe that his own experience and level-headedness would have made a significant difference. “I know I could have kept her safe,” Steve says, a mixture of regret and sorrow in his voice. The crash that took Diana’s life, along with that of her companion Dodi Fayed and the driver, left a deep scar on the world. For Steve, the pain of that night is still palpable, and the what-ifs continue to haunt him. He’s often wondered how things might have played out if he had been the one to answer the call that evening.

In the years since Diana’s death, Steve has struggled with the constant media scrutiny surrounding the crash. He has been approached countless times by journalists and filmmakers who want his side of the story, but he has always remained tight-lipped. The constant pressure to relive that night has been a burden, but now, after years of reflection, he feels compelled to speak out. “People need to know the truth,” he says, his voice firm. “Diana was not just a princess, she was a person. And if I had been there, I would have done everything I could to protect her.”

For Steve, the pain of that night will never go away, but speaking out now, he hopes to honor Diana’s memory and remind the world of the woman he knew—a woman who, despite the fame and the tragedy, was always searching for peace and happiness.
