Susanna Reid shivered as she remembered the time she left her job as GMB host to hurry back home: “It continues to bother me even now…”

Susanna Reid, the sharp-witted and glamorous presenter of Good Morning Britain, is not just a commanding presence on television but also a devoted mother.

Despite her high-profile career, she ensures that her three sons remain her top priority.

As a single mother, she has navigated the challenges of parenting while balancing the pressures of live television.

Now at 50, she opens up about the emotional reality of watching her children grow up, the struggles of working-parent guilt, and her fears about the empty nest that awaits her.

Balancing Career and Motherhood

For years, Susanna has been a household name, known for her fearless interviews and quick wit, particularly during her time co-hosting alongside Piers Morgan.

But beyond the television cameras, she is first and foremost a mother to three sons—Sam, 18, Finn, 16, and Jack, 15.

While she rarely discusses her personal life, she acknowledges that motherhood is at the core of everything she does.

“Everything stops for my kids,” she admits, emphasizing that despite her demanding job, her children always come first. Whether it’s ensuring they get to school or making time for them amid her busy schedule, Susanna is committed to being present in their lives.

The Emotional Struggle of Letting Go

Her eldest son, Sam, recently left for university, marking a significant transition in her life. Like many parents experiencing this milestone, Susanna found the moment deeply emotional. “It’s heart-wrenching, isn’t it?” she says, reflecting on the moment she dropped him off.

While she encouraged him to embrace this new chapter, she confesses that it wasn’t easy. She quickly realized that this was just the beginning of a new stage in her life—one where her children would gradually leave home. “He’s on a string of three. When he goes, the next one goes, then the next one. This is the start of three or four years of all my ducklings leaving, and then there’s going to be the empty nest. I find that really hard.”

Despite the distance, Susanna remains close with her eldest son, frequently calling him to stay connected. “Every time I’ve called, he’s answered immediately and wanted to talk. And I’m filled with love every time because I think: ‘OK, he’s gone, but he’s not gone gone. He still wants to feel that connection.’”

Co-Parenting and Family Bonds

Although Susanna and her former partner, Dominic Cotton, separated nearly seven years ago, they maintain an amicable co-parenting relationship. She acknowledges how fortunate she is to have a strong co-parenting dynamic, as Dominic lives nearby and shares the responsibility of raising their children. However, when the boys are at her home, she cherishes every moment. “When they are at mine, they do spend a lot of time with me. And that’s very special.”

Her approach to motherhood has always been centered around creating meaningful memories. Whether it’s celebrating birthdays or enjoying simple moments together, she treasures the time she has with them before they venture into adulthood.

A Milestone Birthday with a Special Celebration

Turning 50 was a significant moment for Susanna, not just because of the number but because of what it meant in terms of her career and personal life. Unlike past generations of women in broadcasting, she no longer fears that age will dictate the length of her career. She takes inspiration from other successful women in journalism who continue to thrive well into their fifties and beyond.

“There is no longer a cutoff point for women in my job. Fifty used to be a looming date on the horizon where you thought: ‘How much longer might I last?’ I don’t think that’s the case now.”

Her milestone birthday was made even more special by her sons, who took the time to plan a thoughtful surprise. She describes how they decorated the kitchen, much like she had done for their birthdays over the years. Their excitement in preparing her favorite breakfast and their heartfelt efforts to make the day special deeply moved her.

“When you’ve tried to make every birthday special for them, and now they want to do it for you, there’s something magical about that.”

One of the most touching gifts came from her mother, who created a beautiful book filled with photographs and stories from Susanna’s life. The sentimental gesture left her overwhelmed with emotion, as it captured the journey she has taken as a mother, daughter, and broadcaster.

Navigating Career Pressures and Personal Challenges

While Susanna is one of the most recognizable faces on British television, she admits that the pressures of her job can be intense. Hosting Good Morning Britain requires her to be sharp, informed, and ready to adapt to breaking news, all while handling the unpredictability of live television. She also acknowledges the scrutiny that comes with being in the public eye, particularly in an era where social media amplifies every misstep.

However, she remains unfazed by online criticism, knowing that mistakes are an inevitable part of live broadcasting. “You’ve got to be prepared to make loads of mistakes and not be crushed by them. You just have to say: ‘I got that wrong. Apologies. I didn’t mean to say that.’”

Despite her demanding career, she recognizes the importance of self-care. While she has given up alcohol and invested in a Peloton bike for exercise, she admits that she, like many others, has indulged in comfort eating during the past year. Still, she believes in being kind to herself and allowing space for balance.

Embracing the Future

As she looks ahead, Susanna remains grateful for everything she has—her career, her health, and most importantly, her family. While the thought of an empty nest is daunting, she is determined to make the most of the time she has left with her boys at home.

For now, she continues to wake up at 4 AM every morning, step into the television studio, and bring the news to millions of viewers. But at the end of the day, she returns home to the role that matters most to her—being a mother.

“Everything stops for my kids.” And that, above all, is what truly defines Susanna Reid.
